Camping Clothing

What type of camping clothing should you pack for your family’s camping trip?  We suggest that you pack comfortable clothes so that you will be able to stay comfortable and protected from the elements that you will encounter in the great outdoors. One way to do this is to select and wear the proper camping clothing.

Camping Clothing

Camping clothing should include clothes you can layer. Layers of clothing — such as tank tops, long-sleeved shirts, and sweatshirts — will allow you to reduce or increase clothing as needed. To protect against rain and wind, bring breathable, lightweight waterproof jackets and pants.

All family members need comfortable shoes to prevent blistering and sore feet.  We also like to bring each family member a pair of slip-on shoes or sandals that can be easily removed before entering the tent or camping trailer.

Your camping clothing should include a decent hat.  A hat is important because it can be worn to protect against the sun, wind and rain.  A pair of gloves or mittens will come in handy if the evenings become very cool.

Assembling Your Camping Clothing

One way to assemble a good wardrobe of camping clothing is to choose various items of clothing that can be mixed and matched to handle different trips and different conditions. To do this, you will need to think of the weather you will encounter.

Camping Clothing

One time we went camping in early October and our Saturday was warm and sunny.  In the morning we wore long pants, t-shirts, sweatshirts and light jackets.  By afternoon we were able to shed the light jackets.  However, on Sunday morning, we woke up to two inches of snow!

If you are like our family, you might occasionally have a family member fall in the lake or go to bed and forget his or her shoes outside and it rains on them.  If you have the space, it is a good idea to pack two pairs of shoes and two jackets for each family member.  The rest of your camping clothing isn’t quite so important as far as bringing several of each – but shoes and coats are pretty important!

Camping Clothing
On one of our camping trips, our camping clothing wasn’t exactly up to par. One of us (I won’t point fingers) didn’t pack a coat that would help protect his/her clothes during rain, actually hours and inches of rain. We are embarrassed to admit we bought a jacket that would protect us in the rain – in the gift store at the state park we were staying at!!  After this oversight, we took a little bit more time packing our camping clothing!!

Jackets made out of pile and fleece, which are available in a variety of styles and thicknesses, are the choice of many campers because they're comfortable,  warm , fast drying and lightweight. Wind-proof liners are added to many of today's pile and fleece garments so they'll keep the weather out.

Outer-layer camping clothing (tops and bottoms) protects you from elements such as wind, rain and snow. The best items are breathable and keep the user dry and warm in harsh weather conditions or extended periods of rain.
